Finishing Specialist

Performs duties for Finishing Operations including any combination of the following: die cutting, laminating, weeding, packaging, folding, scoring, cutting, slitting, taping, numbering, sewing, or any other process required to finish the printed piece by performing the following duties personally.  


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • The “Finishing” of printed product, performing a variety of labor steps as required by each job.  Training for the various functions will be provided and prioritized by management.
  • Measures and compares product to quality standards and verifies conformance with Customer specifications.
  • Understands all equipment usage instructions and follows them to ensure safety and productivity.
  • Assembles cartons and skids, labels containers and/or skids, and delivers finished goods to the shipping department.
  • Minimizes the use of overtime and asks the Production Manager for permission to use any overtime in advance.
  • Uses all material such as tapes, grommets, boxes and other supplies at minimum levels necessary to properly finish the job maintaining quality and customer specifications.
  • Carefully reads each Work Order to be sure all job requirements are performed efficiently and correctly in order to meet the job specifications.
  • Completes and maintains required paperwork, as designated by the Production Manager, accurately and on time.
  • Accurately records work time against each job and function.
  • Maintains a friendly, courteous and pleasant attitude with customers and fellow Associates.  Dresses in neat and clean work attire.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of his/her work areas and equipment including the prompt return of all tools and unused material to their proper places.
  • Properly maintains mechanical equipment to manufacturers specifications and recommended maintenance schedule.
  • Actively looks for opportunities to improve efficiency and save money through better operating methods, the elimination of duplicate or unnecessary work, better equipment utilization and ways to enhance the workflow consistent with maintaining or improving quality.
  • Maintains a safe and organized work environment, seeking to improve safety whenever possible that meets all OSHA and other government regulations.
  • Notifies the Production Manager regarding equipment maintenance issues to minimize equipment downtime and interference with the workflow.  When possible, analyzes and recommends solutions.
  • Promptly notifies the Production Manager of any significant work issues.
  • Handles additional responsibilities as assigned to assist in the successful operation of the Company.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

To perform this job successfully, the Associate must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  

High school degree or equivalent plus two to three years of experience in a similar environment.  Preference will be given to those with experience in the print finishing processes.

Ability in English to read and understand work orders, instructions, memos and specifications.  Ability to write simple correspondence and interact effectively with management and fellow Associates on company issues.

Must have strong math skills with the following focus:  use of tape measure, understanding fractions and decimals.  A math and ruler test will be given.



Should be computer-literate with some experience using computers in a work environment.  Software used: Outlook for emailing, Industry-specific software for job costing, material allocations against jobs, and timecards.


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to handle basic instructions in mathematical and/or diagram form in standard situations.

Not Required.  New hire will be Forklift trained and certified.

While performing the duties of this job, the Associate is required to walk, talk, stoop, kneel, crouch and hear and to lift/carry objects of up to 40 pounds.  The Associate is also required to have average dexterity to use arms and hands to finger, handle, feel, reach, touch and lift.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  Assistance to lift large or heavy items is always available.

This Associate is regularly on the shop floor and exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, dust particles, heat and other common hazards found in the printing industry.  Operates finishing equipment and tools such as Cutters, Drills, Corner Rounders, Laminators, Scoring Machines, Hot Glue Guns and Heat Shrink packaging equipment.  Noise levels on the shop floor are usually moderate to loud.


  • Standard Forty (40) hours per week to an occasional maximum of 50 hours including occasional weekends.  Standard work hours are 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday, includes two paid fifteen-minute breaks and a non-paid half hour for lunch.  Consistent attendance is critical.
